Thanks, Seth. Once again I try mightily to reach out to the search engine land, and they just say, goo-goo, goo-goo (or something sounding like that).

It's not much of a scandal. I just was really surprised to learn that Google *had* indexed the NYT archives before, but it remained in the Google News Archives either because it wasn't technically "on the web" or because of the unspoken policy that Google doesn't like registration-based content.
